8 Years on the Morrow

My MIL was able to come out for a visit this weekend. Her youngest has a school holiday this time of year called "Fall Break" and it seems to correspond perfectly at this point to a weekend near my anniversary. She arrived Thursday to a chorus of greetings from the children.

Friday we went to the Tech Museum to see the Leonardo da Vinci exhibit. Fascinating, I could have stayed there all day, but that the littlest children grew weary of Mommy reading them everything. TJ wandered by himself seeking what would intrigue him. MissA kept with me and tried out the models. MissB and MissC mostly hung out with Grandma. After a snack break (there's a little cafe area within the exhibit), I held on to MissC and the older girls wandered with Grandma. We spent the rest of our time there in the Tech Museum's lowest floor exhibits (art to go with Leonardo, electricity, tectonics, and some astronomy).

Saturday, we woke Ben up early -you know, before noon- and headed to Chuck E. Cheese to celebrate MissA's upcoming birthday. Then, at home, she opened her gifts and I made her a maple pudding cake.

While Ben napped, the rest of us walked to the local shopping center for ice cream. There's a fish/aquarium shop on the other side of the supermarket that the children love to explore, so we headed there and discovered it was going out of business! (The owner simply doesn't want to renew the lease, so he's selling the inventory) For the prices, I bought 2 tanks: one for me to have some fish of my choosing, and a smaller one for the children to kill things off in (they'll eventually learn not to saturate the water with food, I'm sure)..

Barb and the children started the cleaning while I cleared and cleaned up the places for the tanks. Once I had one of the spots ready, I joined them and we kept on until most of the basic equipment was in better looking condition (there's still a bit of lime/calcium deposits on the smaller tank's sides).

When all of that was put away, Barb took the children for dinner, and Ben took me out for our anniversary to dinner and a movie. There's a nice mexican restaurant next to the theater where he texted throughout with a coworker about how to make a particular fish dish, the fajitas were tasty. We went then to see Burn After Reading -so funny! Then another coworker messaged about the project and we 'stopped by' work. An hour or so later, we headed home.

Ben: "In my world, I don't always feel the passage of time."

Jenn: "Yes, when you're sleeping, and when you're awake."

(Boy, did I ever deserve to get it for that one...)

This morning, Ben took his mom back to the airport, and woke me with a text message that he went in to work. After getting the children to church and back (I had to pick up my phone, I'd forgotten it), I was hoping to have lunch with him, but the idea was shot down because of the next Beta Testing being at 1PM. So, it's lunch with the children and no hike today (which we've been doing the last 3 weeks), and I guess we'll finish getting the tanks set up.

Mittens for T.J.

I tried the pattern from the book and liked it, but it's too narrow for my hand, so I know it'll be too narrow for his shortly. Then, the book was overdue at the library (I'm one of those who keeps the library in business), so I returned it and haven't picked it up again yet. I was flipping through my books and magazines to see if I have a mitten pattern that's boyish enough and came across the Peruvian Hat in Knit.1 (Spring 2006) (link to pic of the only one on Ravelry) which has people kicking a ball. Perfect! This will be his mitten!

I started off with the cuff from Women's Norwegian Mitts pattern. And am using the palm chart from Glittens pattern. I'm hoping to add a sun to the top of the back, I'm thinking of using the boy/girl pattern for the top of the palm side. After all, if I glitten them, will any of this patterning I'm adding to the back of the hand show much of the time?

MINE!!

img sockfight

Yes, if you were wondering, my children do fight. This morning, I grafted the toe of the first "Little Guys" sock (from Cool Socks!) and sought a foot it would fit. I compared to a pair AJ just outgrew and decided on BB. MissB was SO happy to try it on and wouldn't take it off till MissC started in on her.. Then she had to hide and protect it.. So, now I've got to finish the second one and see if I can squeeze a smaller pair from any remaining yarn for MissC!
